This impressive furnace, the only remaining iron furnace structure in Illinois is on the National Register of Historic Places. The area around the furnace contains picnic pavilions and tables and restrooms. A trail winds along through the bottomlands along Big Creek and provides access to a few deep fishing holes. The drive to the furnace passes through some of the most dense and beautiful hardwood forest along the byway.
